What is pre-natal massage?
Prenatal massage shares many of the goals of regular massage – to relax tense muscles, ease sore spots, improve circulation and mobility, and promote relaxation. But it's also tailored specifically to the needs of pregnant women and their changing bodies, and therapists who are trained in prenatal massage adjust their techniques accordingly.
How do you lie on the table?
Most women find it uncomfortable to lie face down right from the start of pregnancy because of their tender, swollen breasts and bigger belly. It's also not a good idea to lie flat on the back during pregnancy, particularly past mid-pregnancy stages, because the weight of the baby putting too much pressure on the veins that return blood from your legs to your heart. For these reasons, we do pregnancy massage side lying.
How can prenatal massage help me?
Carrying a baby changes a woman's center of gravity and puts increased stress on the back, neck, abdominal muscles, and shoulders. Pregnancy also relaxes the ligaments, so that the pelvic joints are less stable, and changes posture, pulling the pelvis forward. With the added weight of swollen breasts and pregnant tummy, most pregnant women find their upper back and lower back gets very painful.
